The sinner is not aware of this need, so. God acts (first cause) to provide the sinner with wisdom as to the enlightened path. 'Sovereign' Grace in action. The sinner cannot do it by himself since he is in sinful darkness. Or as the Bible (God) puts it, "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." 1Cor 2:14.
But God can; (for His Elect)
Eph 1:17 That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:
18 The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,
19 And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power"
