John Yurich,
Have you repented? Have you confessed your sins and saught pardon for them?

To me they are wallowing in their own self-righteousness and should be ignored. They may be false also. They do no credit to the Gospel. I see nothing even remotely close to their behavior in the New Testament---this picketing at the death of homosexuals or people who they think advocate such behavior. Don't get me wrong, homosexuality is sin and such aren't inheriting heaven, but the Westborough method is not the Christian New Testament method to awaeken people to this issue.

The gifts are given by the will of the Holy Spirit, not the will of cessationism or any other theological movement(1st Cor. 12:11) Furthermore, the book of Acts lists at least one who was not an original Apostle and did signs and wonders, that being Phillip. This just confirms that "Them that believe.." will have signs following, not "You Apostles only who believe..."(Mark 16). And the prophecy of Joel quoted by Peter also proves the point: All flesh will one day receive the Holy Ghost with visions, prophesying and dreams being common signs among them. All flesh, not only the Apostles. "For the promise is to you and to your children and to all that are afar off, as many as the Lord our God shall call," Peter said in regard to the promise of the Holy Ghost(Acts 2:38,39). And of course the most frequent visible sign of receiving the Holy Ghost was speaking in tongues, so it shouldn't be any different to expect something else (or nothing) today.

He should be removed. He violated the standards of the Evangelical Lutheran Church. The conservative position on the matter of such pastors was maintained at the last assembly of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Furthermore, the Bible condemns such acitivity and such are not inheriting heaven.

MBL,
You asked:

"So again, can you show me one single person in the Bible who spoke in tongues who wasn't an apostle"

Yes, the folks saved under Peter were not apostles. Nor were those to whom Paul preached

"OR saved under an apostle?!!?"

No, because the only ones the Bible records as preaching and the others speaking in tongues are the Apostles and those to whom they preached.

But using your logic the only ones who really believed and are saved, are only the Apostles and their immediate converts, applying what Jesus says about those who believe and speak in tongues. That's not true. Jesus says These signs shall follow them that believe..Not "And only those who believe are the Apostles and their immediate converts---and these signs shall follow only them and nobody else."
To me, those who believe, are all who believe, from the New Testament to today. If you want to believe differently, you are entitled to that. I'll let God work out the details, since it's His Spirit that does the dispensing of the gifts according as He will and we aren't to forbid them(1st Cor 12:11; 1 Cor. 14:39).

MBL,
I can show you people who are not Apostles and who spoke in tongues(Acts 10 and 19 come to mind). So that part of your question can be answered with a Yes. As for the other, the answer, so far as I can tell is No. So what does this prove? I'd like to know what you think it proves anyway.

Yes, MBL: The Lord and the Apostles never limited the gifts and manifestations of the Holy Ghost only to those who heard the Apostles. Jesus says "And these signs shall follow them that believe..." Nothing like "only those who will believe your message audibly" or "until you all pass away." We could then ask: Are the only saved people those who heard the Apostles? Of course not. I'll stick with 1st Corinthians 12:11 "But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will."

It doesn't take a degree in law to "judge" Mr.Osteen's lack of division between saved and lost on a TV show. I haven't actually watched it, but I can get a pretty good idea of it from what others have said here. So Mr. Osteen denies the exclusivity of the Christian message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, did I understand that right? Maybe some folks get discernment mixed up with judgement. We are told to discern and be on alert.

Mike,
Does your church use the King James version? Just a question that came across my mind upon reading your remarks below. And I think you mentioned the KJV elsewhere. Hope you're having a good evening.

MBL,
Well, you could "almost" be correct about speaking in tongues being "limited" to just those who heard a living Apostle. But Jesus didn't say that. That could lead to the conclusion that only those who heard the Apostles got saved and everybody else is just believing in vain and never saved. Anyway, I don't think everybody who got saved under an Apostle spoke in tongues. Maybe they did, but one account doesn't list speaking in tongues with the coming of the Holy Ghost. What do you think? My basic doctrinal position is that the gifts and manifestations are given according to the will of the Holy Spirit(1st Cor. 12:11), so I don't believe in forcing tongues on anybody(as in "teaching" somebody to speak in tongues), nor do I forbid them...the Holy Spirit can do all this without our help "as He will"(1st Cor. 12:11) And whether it's a message in a different language/tongue interpreted accordingly for the edification of all, or whether it be the pastor's sermon, all should be judged by an open Bible, because discernment is needed as much as all the other.

MBL,
Sorry, just had to answer you: Acts 10 and 19 show people who were not Apostles and spoke in tongues. And Jesus says those who'd believe would speak..not just those who'd hear the Apostles.

ps. I don't have a tail .

MBL,
I saw it. I responded to your request. The debate on here and the other thread has been interesting and educational but I am concluding at this time.

CBC,
Thankyou for the info.

You two have a good evening

Ah, it disappeard, but that's Ok, bro. .

MBL

Jesus says those who'd believe would speak. He didn't get as specific as you are demanding me and others to get, namely that only those who'd hear the Apostles. Oh well, 'nuff said. Been a good discussion with interesting remarks.

Well, John Yurich, why did God wait so long to start saving people with altar calls? Why aren't they done by Jesus and the Apostles or even 1,000 years after?

Cbcpreacher, if it wasn't for today then I think that 33% would be 0. I see those of the cessasionist camp are as charismatic as ever with their extensive additions to the Bible to attempt to silence others. I thought you didn't believe in new revelation, but it comes in handy when trying to prove your point, no?

Right, Duh....um, what did MBL say about false witness? I don't skim over my Bible. Something I won't do, because it contains all that is necessary to eternal life. No verse in there says only those saved under the Apostles preaching will speak in tongues. It simply says "Those who believe..." Did everybody who got saved under the Apostles also pick up snakes and drink poison? Oh well, enough said... . But thanks for the info. It's been interesting. Cessasiosism requires much extra revelation and stretching of events to propagate itself...but I thought revelation ceased. So why are you guys posting? . Something to think about.

Ah well, Neil. Guess what: It shows a person like me with a BA and concentration in English Language and Literature(along with studying three other languages) isn't infallible nor perfect(Maybe English isn't either). Maybe I got confused or the fingers got ahead of the brain. Good to know we have a perfect Book and perfect Savior, perfect grace, and perfection in Him.
