I'm afraid the only thing you could reason out of a cure for the common cold, is that a cure for the common cold was found.
I agree with you. Now please tell that to "Direction and Truth" who was the one who brought up the subject in the first place.

Scripture says that those who don't believe in God are fools.
Well of course it would! If the scriptures had said that those who don't believe were "really smart," nobody would have taken the scriptures seriously (because of the contradiction), they would have never been copied and passed down to us, and the religion would have been lost to history. The only reason religions survive is because they have certain characteristics which enable that. None of this is very shocking.

You also don't win debates through name calling. Unless you're a child in the schoolyard perhaps.

Thats right pester mike. 6000 years of blowing his nose and still moron man's science cannot even cure the common cold. What a joke.
You don't win a debate by simply restating your position. You not only need to be saved from your own ignorance and superstition but also educated on how to actually have a conversation.

The point I made which you chose to ignore was that significant medical progress has been made, which includes cures for many diseases for which the same point you make about the common cold could have once been made. You haven't given any reason why the common cold should be any different given future advances in medical technology. This is called an argument from ignorance.

If one day a cure is found for the common cold, would it cause you to stop believing in God? If you're like most believers, I doubt it would. This is because religious belief is implacable to reason and evidence, and thus is not true knowledge.

if you are a genuine atheist, there is no right and wrong, so you can just decide what to do today, and then go ahead and do it.
There are entire civilizations which function without a widespread belief in the Christian gospel. You don't see widespread lawlessness in those countries that's greater than what we see here. Morality comes from an understanding of reality and a knowledge that we've all got to share this world. Therefore my right to swing my arm ends at your noise. It also comes from a vision of what kind of world would be the best place in which to live, please see my comments below. Obviously it's not this caricature notion of, "I'm an atheist, therefore no rules, therefore I'll do whatever feels good minute to minute."

Humans are evil..
You raise some good points. I'll pick just one to address, given limited space.

You mentioned the subject of evil and so-called human depravity. I was in the restroom at a public building the other day. Next to the sink was a paper towel dispenser and a trash can for the used paper towels. It was the end of the day and several hundred people had used the restroom that day judging by the number of paper towels in the trash.

What struck me was that not a single paper towel had been thrown on the floor. Nobody had run off with the paper towel roll that was inside the dispenser. And nobody had kicked the can over causing the contents to be spilled onto the floor. Since it was a single occupancy room, everybody had the opportunity for mischief.

If humans were half as evil as you make them out to be, this certainly wouldn't have been the case. What's wonderful is that we're as good as we are. This gives me great hope that humanity will survive to see the day we're able to put the world to rights. I'll admit we do have some baggage from our evolutionary past, behaviors which once worked well, but no longer fit into civilization. This is evidence not of evil, but of humanity as an incomplete work.

Who broke it?
Those are excellent questions, Phoebe.

By "aging" I was referring to biological aging. Which ultimately would be the cause of human death even if cures could be found for all diseases. You're right, this has been the subject of historical legend, but it's my hope that it's a topic which will one day be fully addressed in science as well.

The aging of the sun (stellar aging) is just another reason why humanity must learn to put this world in order. When the sun dies this world will die with it unless a means of escape can be found. Humanity is really the best hope life on Earth has when that day comes.

"Broken" may have been a poor choice in words, as it does imply that it was once whole. Maybe a better word would have been "incomplete," meaning that nature can be indifferent or even hostile to our well being.

Science cannot even cure the common cold.. YET! It's only a matter of time, my friend. The same argument could have been made a few years ago about the chicken pox, but we all know how that one turned out. Science beat your powerless, fictitious God. Hallelujah!

I guess you are dealing with your biggest problem, then? That of not being right with God.
And don't say, "there is no God". One has already quoted two Bible verses which explain what God thinks of people who say such a thing.
"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved...." Acts 16:31
We must all appear before the Judgment Seat of Christ one day. Think on these things, my friend.
Can't stop. Au Revoir.
This is what's called an ad hominem argument. You're not right with the Purple People Eaters from Mars. You better start believing in them or they'll sneak into your bedroom while you sleep and nibble off your toes. I don't worry about things for which there is no evidence, and neither should you.

His tombstone should read, "here lies the remains of a delusional money-grubbing peddler of fiction." Your life won't have true purpose until you realize that humanity is the custodian of life's purpose. Your religion may give meaning to the so-called afterlife, but it makes this life a complete farce. This life would be much better if people would start facing their problems instead of fooling themselves with false reassurances from fantasies for which there is no proof.

Your grandmother died because we haven't yet found the cure for aging and cancer, not because "Jesus decided to take her home." She's not in Heaven, she's rotting in the ground. I'm sorry. If you don't like it, forget the clergy, what you need is an application to medical school. The world is broken and only we can fix it. There's Nobody coming to the rescue. However, that's not a problem because we have the power to take control of nature. We've already had the down payment in the form of the technologies we already have. What has religion given us for a down payment? Nothing. Religion has never once been proven to do a thing. So get excited about science and forget Rick Warren's feel-good nonsense.

Humanity through science will one day conquer the grave and bring a meaningful life to all. Amen!

How can Mike, or anyone, know that *all* lightning is caused by atmospheric static charge differentials? Has he tested every lightning incident in all history & in all space?
You're right, Neil. Every untested lightening bolt could possibly be the handiwork of the Lord Jesus Christ. It could also be the result of Purple People Eaters from Mars. Both are equally unlikely in my estimation.

it's not a good thing to poke a spoon handle into an electric outlet.
Did you barbaric Bible-zombies ever consider actually explaining the concept of why electricity is dangerous to your children? Oh wait, that's right, you can't because you're uneducated morons who don't even understand how electricity works yourselves. You still think lightening is caused by God's anger. You also think that donkeys can talk, people can fly, and a man named Jesus lives in the sky.

You people are perfect examples of why I thank God everyday that I'm an atheist.

You may be surprised to learn that a growing number of church pastors are (often secretly) not believers. There was an interesting report on the subject a few years ago. Here's the link to the document:

The Duggars pay cash for everything and they have no mortgage because they built their house with cash. They have never been on welfare!!
Everybody with half a brain knows you can't support a family of twenty one on a single paycheck. They're living in a fantasy world, purchased and paid for by a television studio. Before their lucky break, Jim Bob was no stranger to handouts and the food pantry. Life in the Duggar family is as fake as an episode of Gilligan's Island.

If they were black people, not white religious nuts, the media wouldn't be paying them big bucks in order to portray them as a "loving Christian family;" They would be calling Michelle a welfare queen and throwing Jim Bob in jail for being behind on his child support payments.

Same applies to religion, faith, and prayer.

I happen to be both atheist and Christian. And I'm the pastor of a church.
