Saved by Grace,
Ron Paul is a libertarian. He understands that regardless of his personal views, autonomous people should be given as much freedom as possible. This includes the freedom to choose acts you deem "perversions". What does it mean for a politician to "adamantly oppose" personal behavior anyway? Also, how can God judge this nation based on the actions of some individuals?

True. I really am just curious about the Abraham story & its implications. Can God order someone to perform an act that God has already deemed a sin?
I realize chronologically the ten commandments were delivered to Moses after the Abraham story , but the ban on killing must be eternal.

I never said I didn't believe in God. Secondly, morality in no way implies the existence of God.

Neil,
As a lapsed Christian I have always been curious about the Isaac and Abraham story. My understanding of epistemology is incomplete. I can only assume we are both using our senses to communicate in this manner. If you obtain knowledge in some other way I am curious about that too.
[AUTHOR]Neil[/AUTHOR]"My point was that I know things the same way you know things"
You still didn't answer my questions, & you make a hasty generalization in asserting I get knowledge the same way you do. How did you learn this, from your senses?[/QUOTE]

My point was that I know things the same way you know things. That still doesn't explain Abraham's behavior. If I defended attempted murder by saying "God told me to", you would correctly have me arrested and charged with criminal behavior. How could God order me to violate one of his own commandments anyway?
[AUTHOR]Neil[/AUTHOR]You must be an empiricist. In another thread, you made the astounding statement that your five senses are in working order. Which of these did you use to reach the conclusion that Abraham was psychotic or delusional? And how do you know they're trustworthy, anyway? Which sense told your that?[/QUOTE]

Neil,
I suppose we both have epistemological problems. How do we know what we know? This question has puzzled smarter men than us for centuries. The closest thing to a plausible answer to this question is Descartes' dictum "I think, therefore I am". This doesn't answer the problem of Abraham's illegal and immoral behavior in the OT.
[AUTHOR]Neil[/AUTHOR]Jack, while you are free to ignore my question below, that isn't going to make your epistemological problems disappear.[/QUOTE]

Lyn,
You've pointed out my other concern about this particular Bible story. "God's" side of this. How could an all-loving, all-powerful being put a simple desert man and his small son through such a horrible ordeal? What's the point? "God" knows Abraham innermost thoughts. Why the drama? It's cruel and unusual. I'm leery of a philosiphy that stresses obedience over independent thought.
[AUTHOR]lyn[/AUTHOR]Jack, You don't understand, Abraham was trusting God, this was a test of his faith. God never intended for Abraham to kill his own son, and the proof of that is the fact that God intervened through His angel. Abraham, on the other hand, had such faith and trust in God, he knew that no matter what, it would work out for God's glory, and it most certainly did!! The problem with the label of 'Christianity' is that it is too broad. Christ preaches on the 'narrow way' and this is a road that few actually find. Why? Because we love our sins and our selves too much to let go. Hope this helps you.[/QUOTE]

[QUOTE]Lyn, you are correct to say that most people have an inate sense of right and wrong. How it got there I don't know. What frightens me is that christianity holds up as heroes people who lack that sense. Abraham's proper response to the voice telling him to kill Isaac should have been "Go to hell!" I know if I heard such a voice I would either ignore it or seek help.
[AUTHOR]lyn[/AUTHOR]To deny God's existence is to escape 'accountability'. That way, we can all live like hell, have our best life now, and go on believing that 'other' people die. Even the self-professing atheist has been known to doubt his denial of God on his deathbed. How does one explain that built in intuition, the knowing of right from wrong? Who put that there? How does an atheist know it's wrong to murder, or to rob a bank? No matter, as soon as we draw our last breath, we all know the truth at that very moment. Christ preached repentance, which is very unpopular in our sexually immoral, arrogant and greedy culture. To turn from our selfish desires is unheard of, let alone submitting to His Lordship. I know Christ is real, He lives within my heart and has set me free from the bondage of homosexuality. Praise God for His grace, and the beautiful gift of salvation.[/QUOTE]

[QUOTE]Neil, If you were walking down the street in Tuscon and saw a man holding down a child preparing to slit his throat, would you not stop it? After wrestling the knife away from the man, would you return the knife if he told you it was God's will? I hope not!
[AUTHOR]Neil[/AUTHOR]How do you know it was a psychotic hallucination? What ethical principle (that you accept) forbids such killing?[/QUOTE]

What do you expect from a christianity? One of the Bible's leading prophets was fully prepared to slaughter his own son as a response to a hallucination. This is often taught as an example of Abraham's great obedience. This was psychotic behavior, not something to be applauded. How can a philosophy based on such principles be worth following?
[AUTHOR]a uk citizen[/AUTHOR] What strong comments from ignorance. Mr. Clegg has been honest. What about your 'christian' President?
Have you ever listened to Bob Dylan, 'With God on our side'? I would rather have an honest man than one who professes faith in the living God, and uses it to kill many in God's name.
Oh dear if ignorance is bliss, tis folly to be wise.[/QUOTE]

Walt,
I know that working out the details of a particular problem is important. When I work on my car I always have a repair manual handy to guide me. These details are important. No repair manual. No repair. But repair manuals don't have overarching themes.
Holy texts clearly have overarching themes. Quibbling about details can cause one to lose focus on thematic importance. Treating holy texts like repair manuals has caused many to turn their backs on religion altogether.

Uh..oh, I am on this site because I received a hate filled pamphlet about homosexuality and this site was listed on the back page. I was curious to see what people who are so sure about other people's "immorality" talk about. It's pretty clear from these "debates" that typical Christians are pretty shaky about their own place in the cosmos. Does God really care if your whole body was immersed? How about just a dribble on the head? What about a dab of holy water on the forehead? If these "issues" concern God than he is much smaller than Christians imagine him to be.

[QUOTE]Uh..Oh, although I am not a believer I have been following the running commentary on baptism and immersion. The notion "the devil is in the details" could not be more apt to this discussion. Quibbling over the minutiae of what constitutes a proper baptism while there is real suffering in the world can only be the devil's handywork. This inane discussion is reminiscent of the little and big endsians in "Gulliver's Travels". A pox on the quibblers.

[QUOTE]Mike, I am sufficiently aware of my own weakness. I just think it takes a little bit of courage to stare into the abyss and recognize we are all alone. I am able to muster this much courage. I know I am weak but I face this on my own two feet.
[AUTHOR]Mike[/AUTHOR]Jack, Jack, Jack.
You miss the whole thing, Jack. We don't lean on God because we're weak-minded. We are strong because we recognize how weak we are without Him. You are weak because you fail to admit, or even recognize your weakness. You think we have a "fairytale" God? God is very real, Jack. Open your mind. We have hope, Jack. What does your fairytale atheism offer you?[/QUOTE]

Terry, I read some of your previous comments. I too am a Ron Paul supporter. I've seem him speak on several occasions and never heard religion bleed into his political statements. I guess his libertarian streak appeals to my existential world view. I do not seek the "spiritual" for two reasons. 1. I don't feel the need. 2. There is nothing there to find. Whether we like it or not the physical world is all there is. I know this because I have five senses and they're all in good working order.
[AUTHOR]terry evans[/AUTHOR]Hi Jack

Badhorsie777, God bless you for your clear and concise comments. I am in total agreement with you, instead of bickering back and forth over who's right, which is prideful and arrogant [this is sin folks!!]let us go to the source, open up His holy word and pray for discernment. Over 150,000 people will die this day alone, and most will leave this world and be cast into outer darkness. And what is the so-called 'body of Christ' concerned with??? Who is more knowledgeable!!!May God have mercy on us; get off your computers and tell someone God's plan of salvation, share the life-changing news, quit acting like highly educated theologians and be the humble servant God has called you to be.

What everybody who responds to these ridiculous sermons fails to realize is that "believers" are weak-minded individuals, unable to face the world without the crutch of a fairytale "God" to lean on. Toughen up!

Black churches have been doing this since Martin Luther King, Jr in the 60's. No one says a word! Black leaders for social change are reverends! They are never questioned by the IRS.

“ MacArthur on End Times ”
John MacArthur wrote forward...Very relevant study in light of his recent message that has caused so much debate. Check out this well written and methodical look at what the Bible says about Israel and the "End of Days." Dr. Barnett has produced another gem!
