2Co 10:1-6 Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, *when your obedience is fulfilled.*

Mourner,
Good points!
In Winthrop's thinking the word of God and the Lordship of Christ, the Ascended Mediator and King (Psalm 2) is that which gives the Magistrate his authority,

Mat 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, *All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.* Go ye therefore, and teach all *nations*, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: *Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you*: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

It is the Ministry's job to lift up the fallen standard when evil comes in like a flood and the Magistrates' to defend that standard by keeping evil at bay. That presupposes the standard is known because agreeable to the word of God.

The Mass. Bay Colony was neither ashamed of Jesus Christ nor the word of God. But that which followed the nation's independence from Britain, was her independence from Christ and His authority in Scripture, it is conspicuously absent (by silence) from her governing principals from that time forward.

Winthrop was aware of the consequence of leadership contrariwise as he stated in the link mentioned.

From William Guthrie's Sermon read this Lord's day. His text Isaiah 44:3 For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my Spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:... "The Lord allows the pouring out of His Spirit,to answer and satisfy the soul that is almost made deaf with the challenges of conscience and threatenings of a broken law; and He will have *His people* to satisfy themselves with it as their portion.

Have been listening to a series on the 10 Commandments. This seemed very relevant to the present rabbit trail. Explains why this is a rabbit trail

If Cruz ought not to have taken over the pulpit (he should not have been allowed); The why is it any different to take up his action for discussion on the Lord's day? Why on the so called Holy Day, Ishtar, did sa limit news but not every Lord's Day is used to discuss the finished work of Christ and his exaltation but politics?

Related to the article and Cruz's half truth https://www.mtholyoke.edu/acad/intrel/winthrop.htm
What Winthrop actually said. Did this nation continue with Winthrop's 1630 line of thought, in 1776?

I fear lest this discussion not qualify for Isaiah's promise preceptiv

Remember the sabbath implies that it was not a new ordinance, Genesis states God gave his example of rest to Adam's posterity at that time. Israel in Egypt had lost their distinctiveness as a family being so long among the Egyptians who were idolators. See Hebrews 4:1-11 v.4 For if Jesus (Joshua)had given them rest, then would he not afterward have spoken of another day. Hebrews states like creation it is a matter of faith

Dave, it is Scriptural to look to teachers, to endeavor to keep the unity of the body. Christ appointed teachers to that end. I went back and finished reading to the end of what I offered to you from Henry, this also was relevant to the topic of the 4th Commandment and the Divinity and authority of Christ the Lord As B. said Christ the reality had come. All the regulated and appointed holy days you speak of were fulfilled in Him. The time of transition from the shadow in Colossians 2:17 The Jews had been instructed in these shadows of things to come, but the body was of Christ. You asked if we are Jews or Gentiles. I've concluded from Scripture that Romans 2:28,29 is true. Rev.11:1,2 infers Gentiles can be Jews but Jews cannot be Gentiles regarding worship. John speaks here of the NT Church, the worship and those who practise it. See Ephes 2:11-22

anyhow Lord bless,
I haven't posted for sometime. I use only one moniker and haven't changed my name? Move?

I have been studying the Christian sabbath in recent days and one morning in private worship I was reading John 5 and was taken by many aspects of the healing of the paralytic. I looked to see what Matthew Henry said on that portion of Scripture and was blessed by what he said on the whole of that miracle. I did think of you Dave when I read it. If you read Henry on John 5:1-16 I think you'd profit as I did.

I look at the news here from time to time and today presented opportunity to share what helped me.

Jh. 5:16 And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.

Matthew Henry: "Christ would thus witness against the tradition of the elders, which had stretched the law of the sabbath beyond its intention; and would likewise show that he was Lord of the sabbath, and had power to make what alterations he pleased about it, and to over-rule the law. Joshua, and the host of Israel, marched about Jericho on the sabbath day, when God commanded them, so did this man carry his bed, in obedience to a command. The case may be such that it may become a work of necessity, or mercy, to carry a bed on the sabbath day; but here it was more, it was a work of piety, being designed purely for the glory of God. Fourthly, He would hereby try the faith and obedience of his patient. By carrying his bed publicly, he exposed himself to the censure of the ecclesiastical court, and was liable, at least, to be scourged in the synagogue. Now, will he run the hazard of this, in obedience to Christ? Yes, he will. Those that have been healed by Christ's word should be ruled by his word, whatever it cost them."

Note in the article that in Britain's law all day off for Easter & christ mass, 6 hour work on the Christian sabbath.

“ Psalm 22 ”
In the past, I've been instructed regarding exclusive psalmody from Psalm 22 by the God's word and Spirit. I found this teaching very edifying and instructive. So much so that I continued my meditation in Psalm 22 this morning. I'd encourage the reading of Matthew Henry's 5 points on verse Psalm 22 v.22-31 regarding *the satisfaction and triumph of Christ in his sufferings*: - I found much encouragement in points 4&5 It was a wonderful way to begin the Lord's day and stir one's heart to render thanks unto the LORD; it is a comely thing and to thy name O thou most High due praise aloud to sing! Thy loving-kindness to show forth when shines the morning light and to declare thy faithfulness with pleasure every night. I can anticipate doing that as well. Thank you for these words of instruction.

“ on schedule ”
This morning in private worship I had a number of thoughts and had my yearly physical in Exodus 15:26 thanks to Robert Murray M'Cheyne's Bible Read Through Schedule. It was after today's reading and meditation I noticed this 2/23/16 edition and listened. I agree. In recent days beginning about 2/12/16 I have been much taken up with the consideration of the first table Commandments; their promises and threatenings. How can anyone claim to be a Christian if they do not take God at His word, and cast themselves in total dependence on Christ who is the fulfillment of the law. Who but Christ could propitiate God's wrath that was due us for original sin in Adam and the least violation of any of his commands? He is our justification by His imputed righteousness. A justification that will be evidenced by a filial fear of God as His adopted children (Mal.1:6a A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honour? and if I be a master, where is my fear?) and an increasing conformity to Christ; even our imperfect sanctification, that is accepted in the Beloved. O for greater thankfulness and love to Christ for all He has done and will do for his people and for grace to walk worthy of such a Savior! Romans 8:9-14

The question stated another way: Should a Christian choose the lesser sinful course between two sinful courses?

From Samuel Wylie's 'Two Sons of Oil'

“...4. All this delegated, or derived power, should be exercised to God's glory, and regulated by his law. 1st Cor. x. 7: "Whether, therefore, ye eat or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God." To effect this end, all our powers should be directed, and of this, his law is the unerring rule. By this, therefore, all rational beings are indispensably bound. God has given them no right to do what it prohibits. To suppose men to possess any such right, is wicked and blasphemous. This would be the same as to suppose God to say to them, I, as the Supreme Legislator, give you my law. To the least breach of it, I annex the penalty of eternal damnation; yet I give you a right to violate this, my law, and to wage war with your God, and direct your artillery against the Sovereign of the Universe!!! The Scriptures inform us otherwise. Deut. xii. 32: "What thing soever I command you, observe to do it; thou shalt not add to it, nor diminish from it."

“The fourth commandment, whose obligation is perpetual, is directed to every relation. Every private individual must observe the law of God; but heads of families, and other superiors, must not only observe it themselves, but make those under their authority do so likewise, as far as their influence can extend, and also punish obstinate violators thereof. "I know," says God, "that Abraham will command his children and household after him." So the magistrate must provide, that the Sabbath be sanctified in all his gates; that is, as far as his civil authority extends. Yea, we find even heathen kings ratifying the laws of the Most High God, Ezra vii. 23. The decree of Artaxerxes, is, "Whatsoever is commanded by the God of Heaven, let it be done for the house of the God of Heaven." -Samuel Wylie

From Gillespies's Miscellaneous Questions “..when the church of Christ sinketh in a state, let not that state think to swim. Religion and righteousness flourish and fade, stand or fall together. They who are false to God will never prove faithful to men."

M. Henry on Gen. 14:17-20
"He was king of Salem and priest of the most high God; and other glorious things are said of him, Heb_7:1, etc. 1. The rabbin, and most of our rabbinical writers, conclude that Melchizedek was Shem the son of Noah, who was king and priest to those that descended from him, according to the patriarchal model. But this is not at all probable; for why should his name be changed? And how came he to settle in Canaan? 2. Many Christian writers have thought that this was an appearance of the Son of God himself, our Lord Jesus, known to Abram, at this time, by this name, as afterwards, Hagar called him by another name, Gen_16:13. He appeared to him as a righteous king, owning a righteous cause, and giving peace. It is difficult to imagine that any mere man should be said to be without father, without mother, and without descent, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, Heb_7:3. It is witnessed of Melchizedek that he liveth, and that he abideth a priest continually (Gen_14:3, Gen_14:8); nay (Gen_14:13, Gen_14:14), the apostle makes him of whom these things are spoken to be our Lord who sprang out of Judah. It is likewise difficult to think that any mere man should, at this time, be greater than Abram in the things of God,...

Fisher:
"Q. 19. Why was Christ vested with this threefold office?
A. The nature of our salvation required that it should be revealed by him as a Prophet; purchased by him as a Priest; and applied by him as a King.

Q. 20. Did ever ALL these offices center in any ONE person except Christ alone?
A. No; for, in order to set forth the vast importance of these offices, as united in the person of Christ, none of those who were typical of him under the Old Testament were ever clothed with all the three: this honour was reserved for himself, as his peculiar dignity and prerogative; John 14:6 -- "I am the way, and the truth, and the life;" that is, the WAY in my death, as a Priest; the TRUTH in my word, as a Prophet; and the LIFE in my Spirit, as a King.

Q. 21. In what states does Christ execute all these offices?
A. Both in his estate of humiliation on earth, and in his state of exaltation in heaven.

Q. 22. What do you understand by Christ's executing of his offices?
A. His doing or fulfilling what was incumbent upon him, in virtue of each of these offices, Matt. 3:15."

Q. 10. Was he ordained or appointed to these offices?
A. Yes, from all eternity; 1 Pet. 1:20 -- "Who, verily, was foreordained before the foundation of the world."

Q. 11. What were the necessary consequences of this eternal designation?
A. His mission and call.

Q. 12. In what consisted his mission?
A. In his being promised, Isa. 7:14, and typified under the Old Testament, John 3:14; and in his being actually sent, in the fullness of time, to assume our nature, and finish the work which was given him to do, Gal. 4:4, 5.

Q. 13. Was he formally called to his mediatory office?
A. Yes; he did not take this honour unto himself, but was called of God, as was Aaron, Heb. 5. 4, 5.

Q. 14. Of what parts did his call consist?
A. Of his unction and inauguration.

Q. 15. What do you understand by his unction?
A. The consecration of him to all his mediatory offices, John 10:36; and the giving of the Spirit, with all his gifts and graces, without measure to him, that he might be fully furnished for the execution of these offices, John 3:34.

WCF SC QUESTION 23. What offices does Christ execute as our Redeemer?

ANSWER: Christ, as our Redeemer, executes the offices of a prophet, of a priest, and of a king, *both in his estate of humiliation and exaltation.*

Fisher's Explanation:

Q. 1. What is the general office of Christ, which respects the whole of his undertaking, and runs through the whole of the covenant made with him?

A. It is his being the only Mediator between God and man, 1 Tim. 2:5 -- "There is one God, and one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus."

Q. 2. What does the office of a Mediator between God and men suppose?

A. It supposes a breach between them, occasioned by sin on man's part, Isa. 59:2.

Q. 3. Could a mere verbal intercession make up this breach?

A. By no means; nothing less than a full reparation for all the damages which sin had done to the honour of God, and his law, could do it away Isa. 53:10.

Q. 4. Was none but Christ fit for being Mediator in this respect?

A. None else: because there was no other who stood related to the two families of heaven and earth, which were at variance, in such a manner as he did.

Rodney, you might like to hear Stephen Charnock read by a man from Ezekiel 9:4 on Mourning for Others Sins. I found it helpful I really enjoy reading Charnock because he elevates one's view of God by his understanding of the Scripture.

Thank you Dorcus for the psalm. I too live in the rural mountains, where guns are a common sound day and night. I suspect at dusk and just past they're jack-lighting deer. Ladybug thanks for you post. It is common here for the men folk to be armed. Not so much the women. I've never cared for guns, but I do I think it's lawful to uphold & protect life.

Appreciated Matthew Henry's thoughts. There are events in life that make the hypothetical less so. I was concerned with the war against the flesh and spirit that the incident provoked and I was thankful to God for the historic examples of what the godly have done in times past. They too found themselves in positions where the normal means of protection were not in place, as they once were.

I do believe that all this is relative to Romans 1. What begins with worshiping and serving the creature rather than the Creator, ends in the downward slide of the reprobate; the signs of which are listed in that same chapter. Perilous times are mentioned in 2 Tim.3; 8Now as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so do these also resist the truth: men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith. 9But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as theirs also was.

Someone tried to break into my house two nights ago. The house is old, poorly lit and there was no car in the drive way. I was upstairs not yet asleep. I thought I heard something and tried to convince myself it was in all in my mind.

Next morning when I was letting the dog out (who's too old to bark now) I stepped on the door handle. I had an inside lock which appeared was the secondary deterrent, God being my primary protector.

I spoke to a neighbor this morning who works for the town. He said there been a rash of vandalism on older homes that look abandoned, related to heroin addiction among the youth. They are taking out all the copper pipe and even pulling wires out of the walls.

I found my comfort on the first day of the new year meditating on two messages I heard; 'The Consequences of Sin in this World' I listened to 12/31 and 'The Consequences of Sin in the World to Come', the next day 01/01.

The Scripture that came to mind with power in the second message was Matt.10:28 The whole incident did put the life to come in sharper focus.

Kind regards
Eph 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
Eph 4:16 From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.

I've recently been reading through
2 Chron. It is note worthy that it was the Davidic Kings that cleansed the temple after seasons of apostasy. I've been listening to a message that compared Christ's temptation in the wilderness to Israels' in the wilderness. They were tempted by hunger, by thinking their privileges as the people of God, superseded obedience to God and to their false worship (1 Cor.10:20). Christ was anointed as the (Prophet/Priest/) King of Israel at his baptism by a birth-right priest/prophet John Baptist and *he cleansed the temple* which is what the Jews expected of David's son as 2 Chron. upholds the kings that cleansed the temple as exemplary sons of David for so doing.

I was encouraged to think of all that Christ has done and is doing to fulfill Scripture until his second Advent

Ho Ho NO!

Just recovering for the effects of the local revelry in the middle of the night and too down cast to comment when the sight honors this day over the Lord's day.

If men don't protect women and children God does. He did in the night watches, preserve a young woman and myself who could have been harmed by the antics.

He even gave me songs in the night Psalm 27 and 6 sung in part with a trembling lip.
