I have been studying the Christian sabbath in recent days and one morning in private worship I was reading John 5 and was taken by many aspects of the healing of the paralytic. I looked to see what Matthew Henry said on that portion of Scripture and was blessed by what he said on the whole of that miracle. I did think of you Dave when I read it. If you read Henry on John 5:1-16 I think you'd profit as I did.

Matthew Henry: "Christ would thus witness against the tradition of the elders, which had stretched the law of the sabbath beyond its intention; and would likewise show that he was Lord of the sabbath, and had power to make what alterations he pleased about it, and to over-rule the law. Joshua, and the host of Israel, marched about Jericho on the sabbath day, when God commanded them, so did this man carry his bed, in obedience to a command. The case may be such that it may become a work of necessity, or mercy, to carry a bed on the sabbath day; but here it was more, it was a work of piety, being designed purely for the glory of God. Fourthly, He would hereby try the faith and obedience of his patient. Appreciated Matthew Henry's thoughts. There are events in life that make the hypothetical less so. I was concerned with the war against the flesh and spirit that the incident provoked and I was thankful to God for the historic examples of what the godly have done in times past. They too found themselves in positions where the normal means of protection were not in place, as they once were.

Next morning when I was letting the dog out (who's too old to bark now) I stepped on the door handle. I had an inside lock which appeared was the secondary deterrent, God being my primary protector.

I spoke to a neighbor this morning who works for the town. He said there been a rash of vandalism on older homes that look abandoned, related to heroin addiction among the youth. They are taking out all the copper pipe and even pulling wires out of the walls.

I found my comfort on the first day of the new year meditating on two messages I heard; 'The Consequences of Sin in this World' I listened to 12/31 and 'The Consequences of Sin in the World to Come', the next day 01/01.

I've recently been reading through
2 Chron. It is note worthy that it was the Davidic Kings that cleansed the temple after seasons of apostasy. I've been listening to a message that compared Christ's temptation in the wilderness to Israels' in the wilderness. They were tempted by hunger, by thinking their privileges as the people of God, superseded obedience to God and to their false worship (1 Cor.10:20). Christ was anointed as the (Prophet/Priest/) King of Israel at his baptism by a birth-right priest/prophet John Baptist and *he cleansed the temple* which is what the Jews expected of David's son as 2 Chron. upholds the kings that cleansed the temple as exemplary sons of David for so doing.

Just recovering for the effects of the local revelry in the middle of the night and too down cast to comment when the sight honors this day over the Lord's day.

If men don't protect women and children God does. He did in the night watches, preserve a young woman and myself who could have been harmed by the antics.
