Jim,

Yes, the Bible talks about greed.

I was focusing on the legalistic opinion about what constitutes an acceptible level of income for a Christian.

Rich-ness is relative. Most Americans are rich when compared to folks living in third-world countries, so be careful about throwing the 'rich' label around.

“"There's always the question of how much money is too much for a pastor to earn," said Carl Trueman, a pastor and professor of church history at the Westminster Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania. "When you're looking at his lavish private lifestyle, I'd say that's too much."...”

This was a missed opportunity for redirecting the conversation to more important matters.

We should stick with addressing Osteen’s theological/doctrinal issues rather that debating obvious matters of opinion.

BTW, many men of the OT were rich, yet we don’t second guess them.

All these polls present unbiblical reasons for why the church is 'dwindling' or eg young people are 'not interested in religion'. As such, I ignore them.

The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit." - John 3:8

who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. - John 1:13

The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. - 1 Corinthians 2:14

Ad hominem attacks can take the form of overtly attacking somebody, or more subtly casting doubt on their character or personal attributes as a way to discredit their argument. The result of an ad hom attack can be to undermine someone's case without actually having to engage with it.

I have a Romans 14 / Colossians 2 viewpoint of Christmas with regard to how you celebrate it. Personally,
I see it more as a secular/cultural holiday. Jesus is Lord and is glorified/celebrated/loved every day.

Nothing wrong appealing to law.

But when they had stretched him out for the whips, Paul said to the centurion who was standing by, "Is it lawful for you to flog a man who is a Roman citizen and uncondemned?" - Acts 22:25

Dead men support abortion (Ephesians 2)

If you can get through reading the technical side of D&C or partial birth abortion without wanting to vomit, then your heart is dead. You need Jesus.

I second Mike's thought.

Can I get a synoynym?

Sounds kinda Catholic-ee to suggest there is only one valid translation.

"I defy the Pope and all his laws. If God spare my life, ere many years I will cause a boy who drives the plough to know more of the scriptures than you do." -Tyndale

My Sabbath rest is Christ Himself, the Author and Lord of the Sabbath.

I'm so glad over a year ago I came across some works that innoculated me against this making the "10 commandments" the "rule of [my] life".

Christ is All. If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. Going to the law leads to dispair. Going to Christ leads to life, joy, love, peace,...

"Christ is All: No Sanctification by the Law"

penned wrote:
we are required to sabbath. our sabbath rest is our freedom from works for our salvation. this salvation is today.
those not resting are working for their salvation.
so yes that commandment is binding....
we must rest in His work.

Shane,

I appreciate Ray Comfort as well. He is a brother.

However, my statements were rhetorical questions. What evangelistic methods were used in which contexts? Jews vs Gentiles. It is clear. And ask why.

My point was the silence re
the 10 commandments which folks are saying are binding on believers.

I believe God put the Sabbath smack in the middle because he knew we'd try to make them our rule of Life instead of Christ Himself.

John,

We have answered your questions. You choose to see everything through your law-colored glasses.

Paul's question, 'Shall we sin that grace may abound?", makes no sense if you are preaching that Christians are under Law.

"Sabbath-breaking"

Do you keep all the rules of the Sabbath laid out in the OT? --ie The real Sabbath that God instituted in the OT.

Or do you refer to Sunday as "the Sabbath" and make up your own rules (and loopholes) not prescribed in the Word that everyone else must follow?

The true Sabbath is resting in Christ how many ever days of the week you feel led
to (Colossians) by the Spirit.

I'm still looking in the NT epistles for all those Sabbath and tithing guidelines...

"Keeping the Lords Day"???

Oh Foolish Galatians...

"until"
"no longer under"
"captive"

Acts 15: No mention of "Tell them to keep the 10 commandments"

Romans 6: No mention of "Keep the 10 commandments"

Romans 7: "died to the law..."
"released from the law"
"service in new way of Spirit and not in old way of written code"

Peter at Pentecost: Did not do a Ray Comfort (preach the 10 commandments)

Paul at Areopagus to Gentiles: Did not do a Ray Comfort

How does Paul motivate?

"Be holy for He is holy"
"You were bought with a price"
"love of Christ constrains us"
"consider yourself dead to sin"
etc, etc.

Are some of the 10 commandments mentioned in the epistles? Yes. But what for. What is the context? Is Paul's goal for you to live by some written code or rules or to walk by the Spirit? Why do the epistles always start with who you are in Christ, then follow up with what you should do in light of that?

Don't make the faulty assumption that "law" refers to the 10.

Instead of listening to well-meaning Christians, Fathers, Confessions that put themselves under OT law, just read the Scripture and figure out for yourself. If you hold to it fine, but don't enslave others (Rom 14:22, Col 2).

And "The Sabbath" is "The Seventh Day", not "one day in seven"

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. - Romans 12:2

Halloween is what you make it....like movies, music, sports, job. You judge those that participate even if they wear innocent costumes or collect candy, neither of which is sinful. And what movies and what type of music or sports do you watch or listen to. Easy to judge. Romans 14.
